Packaging Application: Schefenacker Vision Systems USA is a leading manufacturer
and supplier of interior and exterior mirrors for the automotive industry. It receives parts from
suppliers, produces injection-molded plastic cases and mirror brackets, assembles the mirrors and
ships the completed mirrors to major automakers worldwide.
Packaging Challenge: Parts were handled and shipped using a combination of
expendable corrugated boxes and foam sheets. The foam sheets often slipped during transit and
caused part damage. The ongoing need for expendable packaging caused Schefenacker to experience
high recurring packaging costs with a poor return on investment. Additionally, messy expendable
packaging created housekeeping, efficiency, disposal and safety issues.
Packaging Solution: ORBIS Account Manager Greg Klezek, with the help of the ORBIS
Engineering Services team, assessed Schefenacker’s operations, material flow and product protection
requirements. For maximum standardization, they recommended a system of plastic reusable StakPak
containers and durable custom interior dunnage to protect product throughout the supply chain. For
added cost savings over the life of the dunnage, ORBIS is often able to design a single versatile
dunnage design to accommodate several different components. Today, ORBIS continues to support
Schefenacker’s packaging program.
Results:
- Reduced ongoing expendable packaging costsby 50% over one year
- 6 - 9 month return on investment
- Improved product quality
- Reduced risk of injuryReduced packaging costs enabled Schefenacker to negotiate lower
piece-price with their parts suppliers
- Improved workflow and handling
- Improved line efficiency - line operators no longer gather and dispose of expendable
packaging
