Company: South Charleston Stamping and Manufacturing (SCSM)
Packaging Application: In-house material handling at South Charleston Stamping and
Manufacturing (SCSM)
Packaging Challenge: Improve throughput and save time in the company’s
manufacturing and assembly operations.
Packaging Solution: ORBIS worked with SCSM to implement a reusable bulk
container program. Currently, South Charleston Stamping and Manufacturing uses 2,000 containers.
The stampings are delivered to the assembly area on a need basis. After the parts are removed from
the container, it is collapsed and removed by a lift truck and replaced with a full container. This
system saves time, floor space and helps improve their material handling operations.
Product: 45" x 48" x 25" and 45" x 48" x 34" containers
Results: By using ORBIS reusable containers on a need basis, SCSM has saved time,
improved warehouse space and throughput. The containers can be collapsed and stored in a relatively
small amount of space. The ratio is about 3:1, meaning that the company can store three collapsed
containers for every full container. In turn, less warehouse space is needed than required by
traditional types of containers that don’t store flat.
